Open Level Sewing Series

(adult beginner through advanced)

A great solution for busy lives and shifting schedules – sign up for the amount of classes you need to complete your project. Take any combination of dates offered, starting and stopping when you want. Open level accepts beginner (see our beginner class special*),  intermediate and advanced level sewers and we will teach you what you want to learn. We have 6 straight stitch machines, 2 sergers and a coverstitch available to work on during the class, so classes are limited to 6. Pick the dates that work for you and let us know what you want to learn! The weekday morning and evening classes run all year long, but here are the current dates for our Spring Season:

BEGINNER CLASS SPECIAL:

Learn to sew without a major investment! You will learn how to operate the sewing machine using basic sewing techniques while making our reversible tote bag with a pocket. You will learn to place the pattern on your fabric, cut and then pin the pieces together to prepare for sewing. Sewing tools and machines will be provided for you in the class. Classes are offered during the adult’s open level dates and times (listed below). You can split it up into two – 3 hour classes or one all day class on Saturday.

COST: 

$160 for 2 – three hour classes (or one 6 hour Saturday class) includes cotton fabric to make the tote bag

New! Project Workshops:

We know that some of our students like to learn how to make a specific project in one class, so we will be offering Project Workshops over the next coming months. Here is the first in our series of different projects taught by local Bay Ridge designer, Amara Felice! You can check out her designs here on her etsy website.

Applique Pouches:

sewing-classes-brooklyn-heart-pillow-optIn this workshop you will learn the technique of applique by making 2 different sized zippered pouches. Both pouches are fully lined with matching ykk zippers and pull tabs. The medium sized leather pouch (5.5” x 7”) will have a cut out fabric applique and can double as a clutch for an evening out. The small oilcloth pouch (5” x 4”) will have a heart applique and can hold cash and cards or other small items. Taught by local Bay Ridge designer, Amara Felice.  All materials are included in the price of this 3 hour workshop.

Project Workshop: Toiletry / Travel Case:

sewing-classes-brooklyn-make-a-travel-case-optIn this workshop you will make a beautiful denim toiletry/travel case that you will use for years to come! Sewing experience is a must for this class and you will learn some new techniques that you can use when making other small bags or cases.  The bag measures 8″ long X 4.75″ wide X 3.75″ tall. It has a 3/4″ strap, a matching nylon YKK zipper with pull tab and is lined in a waterproof fabric. Taught by local Bay Ridge designer, Amara Felice.  All materials are included in the price of this 3 hour workshop.

Studio Share

Studio Share is for those who are working on their own projects and would like to use the machines and tables in our studio. We offer studio share during the days and times of our Open Level Sewing Series so you must book in advance. Other days or times are available by appointment so contact us for details.

We will provide a cutting table, a straight stitch machine and some basic sewing tools. We also have 2 sergers and a coverstitch machine available for your use. If you need help with your project, we will have an instructor on hand but please note that additional rates will apply depending on what you need. Please let us know if you will need help from an instructor when you book your time.

COST: $15 and hour, or $30 for 3 hours

 

Mom and Me

(age 8 & up – Beginner)  

Spend a fun afternoon with your child learning how to sew! In this workshop you will learn how to operate the sewing machine using basic techniques while making your reversible cross body bag. You will learn basic cutting and pinning to prepare your fabric for sewing. Fabric, sewing tools and machines are provided for you in class. This is a 3 hour workshop which includes all materials needed to complete your bag. Classes are limited to 6 students.

SUMMER WORKSHOP:

Alteration Workshops: Take It In!

This demonstration style workshop is for the sewer who wants to learn how to take in basic garments. Topics covered in the first two hours will include various ways to take in pants, skirts and tops that are too big and best ways to sew the seams so that your garment looks professionally done when completed. We encourage you to bring a garment that you need to have altered so Catherine can show you the steps needed to do your project in the last hour of class.

COST: $75

Hand Sewing & Hemming

This workshop is divided in two segments – learning the basics of hand sewing and learning how to hem on the machine. You can take either part or the entire workshop. For machine hemming you must know how to operate a sewing machine (see Beginning Class Special above if you need to learn).

Hand sewing basics – first segment (1 1/2 hours)

Learn basic hand stitching so you can hem your own pants, skirts and dresses. We will also teach you basic repairs such as sewing on buttons, snaps, and hooks and eyes as well as repairing a hole in a sweater. All supplies are provided for the class.

Machine hemming – second segment (1 1/2 hours)*

Learn basic hems on the sewing machine including how to shorten or lengthen a hem for pants, skirts and dresses. We will also teach how to do a jean hem on the machine. All supplies are provided for the class.

*You must know how to operate a sewing machine.

COST: 

$75 for both segments (or $40 if you want to stay for only one segment)
