Quick Start Machine Sewing:

Do you own a machine that is still sitting in the box or need a quick review if you haven’t sewn in a while? Bring your machine in to learn the correct way to wind a bobbin, how to thread your machine and the proper way to operate the machine to keep from losing your thread. Once your machine is threaded, you will learn how to sew straight seams, then basic cutting and pinning techniques to make a small phone case. We will also cover basic maintenance to keep your machine running smoothly. Don’t own a machine? That’s ok because you can use one of ours!

This class is 3 hours long. See more details on class registration link.

Beginner Garment Sewing – Wovens:

Ready to sew your first garment but don’t want to commit to a fitted style? In this class you will have a choice to either make an on trend gathered skirt or a pajama pant, both with an elastic waist and perfect for the beginner sewist. We will teach you how to choose the right pattern size for your body, read the instructions given with the pattern (because sewing has it’s own language), cut out your pattern and fabric, then walk you through the steps to complete your skirt or pant.
You must have prior sewing experience or have taken Catherine’s Beginner Sewing or Quick Start Machine Sewing class.

Skirt – McCall’s pattern #M8066

Pajama Pant – Kwik Sew K4144* or K3981:

Class is 6 hours long, split between two 3 hour sessions. Class is limited to 4 students. See more details on class registration link.

Make It Fit:

This workshop is for you if you are making your own clothes, but the end product still doesn’t fit correctly. We will explore what to look for in relation to the fit of a garment, such as balance and proportion, and learn how you can correct your pattern. Each student must bring a garment (or muslin) that they have made to try on in class along with their commercial pattern. Catherine will review each garment on the student (be prepared to try your garment on in class) and discuss how it needs to be corrected. Then she will teach each student how to make that correction on their pattern. Bring up to 2 garments and the accompanying patterns.* This is a small class and limited to 4 students.

*If you have any questions about what type of garments to bring, please contact Catherine at brooklynstitchery@gmail.com.

Materials needed:

2 already made garments (or muslins) and the pattern that you made it from.
