Patternmaking Workshops:

If you have ever wanted to learn how to draft your own patterns for sewing clothes to fit your body then these are the workshops you will want to take. You will start by taking one of the Foundation Workshops (see below) in which you will learn how to draft a block (sloper) that will fit your body like a second skin. You will then transform your block into a pattern that you will cut and sew in muslin to make fit corrections. Once you have a fitted sloper pattern, you can continue to the Pattern Drafting Open Level in which you will learn how to draft other styles from your sloper pattern. Our classes are small and limited to 4 students.

Materials needed for pattern drafting workshops (we sell them):

1 – 36″ metal ruler

1 – 18″ x 2″ C-Thru ruler

1 – 24″ metal french curve

1 1/2″ yards of unbleached cotton muslin

1 yd. of pattern paper

1 yd. of tracing paper

PLEASE CONTACT US at brooklynstitchery@gmail.com if you are interested in any of the Patternmaking Workshops for a different time slot.

Patternmaking Open Level:

We are now running these classes based on the availability of the instructor and students, so please call us or email us for more information.

We are offering you two choices for learning how to make clothing patterns:

You can start by making of the custom-fit foundation patterns. See details for each foundation listed below. Then once you have made your custom-fit foundation patterns for the skirt, bodice with sleeve or trouser, you can learn how to manipulate your sloper into a style that you would like to make. For example, you can learn how to take your basic skirt sloper and make an A-line skirt with a waistband. You must have a custom-fit sloper pattern to work from (see foundations listed below).

You can learn how to make a pattern from a garment that you currently own and would like to copy (we call it a rub-off). It is not necessary to take a garment apart to copy it, so bring your favorite garment to learn the techniques of creating your rub-off!

Classes are limited to 4 students, so pre-registration is required. All materials needed for the class are provided by the student.

Basic Bodice Foundation:

You will learn how to draft a custom-fit bodice block (sloper) using your own measurements then transform your bodice block into a pattern. After making your pattern, you will cut and sew a personal sample bodice in muslin fabric and then make appropriate fit corrections to your original sloper. Once you have completed this workshop, you can continue to learn how to make different bodice styles using your custom-fit sloper pattern in the Pattern Drafting Open Level classes.

Basic Sleeve Foundation:

The basic sleeve is the foundation in which all other sleeves are based.  In order to achieve a well fitting sleeve, it needs to allow for flexibility and movement.  In this workshop you will utilize your new patternmaking knowledge and skills to draft the basic sleeve sloper and attain a comfortable fit.  The basic sleeve is a set-in sleeve drafted to fit the armhole of the bodice created in the Basic Bodice Foundation Workshop.  Once the draft is complete, you will make a pattern and construct the first “test” sleeve to be sewn to your bodice muslin (previously created in the Basic Bodice Foundation Workshop).  We will fit the sleeve according to your body and make necessary fit corrections. Once you have completed this workshop, you can learn how to make different bodice and sleeve styles using your custom-fit sloper pattern in the Pattern Drafting Open Level classes.

Please come to class with your completed bodice muslin as we will be sewing the test sleeve to it.

Basic Skirt Foundation:

In this workshop you will learn how to draft a custom-fit skirt block (sloper) using your own measurements then transform your skirt block into a pattern. After making your pattern, you will cut and sew a personal sample skirt in muslin fabric and then make appropriate fit corrections to your original sloper. Once you have completed this workshop, you can continue to learn how to make different skirt styles using your custom-fit sloper pattern in the Pattern Drafting Open Level classes.

Basic Trouser Foundation:

The Trouser Foundation is the basis for all trousers, pants, jeans and shorts and jumpsuits (if you have already drafted the bodice – see Basic Bodice Foundation above).  In this workshop you will learn how to draft a custom-fit trouser block (sloper) using your own measurements then transform your trouser block into a pattern.  Once the trouser pattern is made, you will then cut and sew a personal sample pair of trousers and make appropriate fit corrections that you will transfer back to your original sloper. Once you have completed this workshop, you can learn how to make the different pant styles (as mentioned above) using your custom-fit sloper pattern in the Pattern Drafting Open Level classes.
